ABOUT BURNS GUTHRIE

An award-winning architectural practice

Burns Guthrie and Partners, based near Tunbridge Wells, Kent, is an award-winning architectural practice that works creatively and collaboratively to transform its clients' aspirations into beautiful, practical buildings.

Architects Clare Gregory and Melissa Hitchcock have over 60 years of experience between them. They are members of the Royal Institute of British Architects and are registered with the Architects Registration Board. Clare and Mel combine a depth of knowledge and professionalism with a friendly, approachable way of working, to bring about the very best outcomes for their clients. Hard-working and detail-driven, they love what they do. Their passion to transform lives with the spaces they create is as strong today as it was when they started their architectural careers.

Burns Guthrie was founded in 1950 by Cecil Burns and Bob Guthrie. Its longevity is built on trust and service while evolving with the times. Today, digital technology, sustainability and communication are fundamental to everything it does. Clare and Mel believe in the potential of architecture to create better places, stronger communities and a more sustainable future.

RIBA chartered practice Burns Guthrie offers a full range of architectural services, including feasibility studies and design for a range of building types, including educational, residential, civic and ecclesiastical. At every step, Clare and Mel will bring impartial advice and creative thinking to your project. Consideration is given to adding value, from maximising light and space to identifying hidden potential at an unpromising site. Clare and Mel will navigate the planning system on your behalf while optimising the construction budget.

We endeavour to deliver buildings that delight and make each design journey enjoyable and satisfying for all.

How do we work?

  • We focus on the open, easy communication and working relationships that are vital to the success of any project. By listening, understanding and interpreting your requirements, Clare and Mel can help you get the best out of your project, whether that be an iconic civic building or a bespoke private home. We work closely with our clients to give impartial advice and help create precise, imaginative project briefs that lead to exceptional architectural design solutions. We believe the creative process should be fun and enjoyable and that the client is an integral part of the project team.
  • We embrace digital technology. 3D visualisations help clients and team members to understand the design more clearly, so that adjustments can be made, and errors can be avoided, at an early stage, which saves time and money later.
  • We have made sustainability a core value of our practice. We are advocates of low-carbon design and construction, and take a Passive First approach to our buildings, ensuring optimal energy-efficiency. We seek to use regenerative materials, with the aim of having a net-positive impact on the natural environment. We seek holistic solutions that respect and protect the planet, keeping in mind that a building is for life, not just for the now.

If you have a project in mind, please call or email us to discuss how we can help and to arrange an initial consultation. Our selected portfolio is available to view on our Projects page.
